Port Layola Football Club (FC) is leading the Premier League of Belize (PLB) opening season finals after winning their first game against the San Pedro Pirates FC on Saturday, November 30th. The San Pedro team was unable to defend their home turf and lost the match 3-0 at Ambergris Stadium.

The stadium doors opened at 6PM, and by the time the game started at 7:30PM, it was packed to capacity. The San Pedro fans came out in droves to support their football team, which promised to strive for a win in their attempt to bring the national championship to the island.

In the opening minutes of the match, the island boys made a close attempt at the Port Layola goal, eliciting loud cheers from the crowd in the bleachers. However, the visiting team soon began to dominate possession and effectively blocked any further attempts from the island squad. The first goal of the match came in the 16th minute, scored by Port Layola’s Rene Leslie. The San Pedro Pirates struggled to make a comeback, and nearly ten minutes later, in the 25th minute, player Andres Orozco converted a penalty shot to score the second goal. As the first half was nearing its conclusion, a penalty kick was awarded to the San Pedro Pirates. Unfortunately, the attempt hit the post, denying the island team a goal.
In the second half, the San Pedro Pirates launched an offensive effort. Despite their continuous attacks, they were unable to get the ball past Port Layola’s Colombian goalkeeper, Oscar Palomino. Port Layola pressed forward and, in the 73rd minute, broke through the Pirates’ defense, allowing Orozco to score their third goal.

The second game of the PLB finals is scheduled for Sunday, December 8th, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City. The decisive match will start at 4PM.
