Island athletes Kian Trejo, Kent “Bob” Gabourel, and Jesus “Levi” Contreras made their mark at this year’s Belize City Triathlon, which took place on December 1st. Trejo earned second place in the Elite Male division, while Gabourel secured fourth. Contreras and his team also achieved first place in the Male Relay category.
This multi-sport event includes swimming, cycling, and running over various distances. Belize City’s Councilor Kaya Cattouse organizes it in collaboration with the Belize National Triathlon Association, the Belize National Sports Council, and the Belize Coast Guard. The event, held at Memorial Park in the city, featured five categories: Junior Male, Elite Male, Junior Relay, Mixed Relay, and Male Relay.
The organizers reported that the competition demonstrated remarkable sportsmanship, athletic discipline, and courage. After all the challenges were completed, the winners were announced. Athletes from the island performed notably well, with Trejo taking second place in the Elite Male category. He mentioned that he gave his all in the competition. “My intention in the swim section was to stay at the top, maintain the momentum on the biking part, and save energy for the run,” he said. “The focus was to give it my best, and I fought for my prize.” He expressed his gratitude to everyone who supported him, stating that he will continue to improve in the sport. Gabourel, a veteran cyclist who has represented the country in various international competitions, was also thankful for the opportunity to participate in this year’s triathlon and compete among some of the best athletes.
Contreras, on the other hand, thanked his team for selecting him for the squad. He dedicated his first-place win to them and to everyone who believed in him and his passion for sports.
