San Pedro Pirates made a winning return to the Premier League of Belize (PLB), defeating Progresso FC 2–0 in their first match of the Opening Season. The anticipated game took place on August 15th at the Ambergris Stadium in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.
The match kicked off at 7:30PM, drawing loud cheers from the bleachers as fans turned out in droves to support the island’s premier football team. In the opening minutes, the dominant Progresso side repeatedly threatened the Pirates’ goal. The visitors came close to opening the scoring on several occasions but couldn’t capitalize on their chances.
The islanders responded with bursts of aggressive offensive plays, which were stopped by Progresso’s defense. As the visitors continued to apply pressure throughout the first half, San Pedro remained defensively disciplined and kept the match scoreless through the end of the opening 45 minutes.
The Pirates regrouped during the intermission and returned in the second half with a more offensive approach. Their strategy soon paid off when San Pedro opened the scoring with a powerful shot from the left side of the field.
Progresso reorganized its defensive and attacking lines and responded by pressuring the islanders. The visitors came close to equalizing, but the Pirates’ goalkeeper blocked a long-range attempt that could have tied the match.
San Pedro returned to the attack and doubled its lead late in the game. The second goal gave the Pirates additional momentum, leading to several attempts to widen the gap. The increasingly physical play also resulted in several fouls, with some San Pedro players receiving yellow cards.
Despite the interruptions, the Pirates maintained control while Progresso struggled to mount a comeback. San Pedro continued searching for a third goal, but at the final whistle, the score remained 2–0, securing the Pirates their first victory of the new PLB campaign.
The team thanked its supporters for turning out for the season opener. The Pirates had been absent from recent PLB seasons while the club underwent restructuring.
San Pedro Pirates return to the Ambergris Stadium on Saturday, August 22nd, when they host Wagiya SC. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30PM.
