The island’s premier football squad, San Pedro Pirates FC, played another thrilling home game on Saturday, August 22nd, earning a solid 3-1 victory over Wagiya SC. The win in their second match of the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Opening Season puts the island team in good standing as they prepare for their third game on the mainland against Port Layola on August 30th.
In the first half, Wagiya came out as the dominant team, putting pressure on the Pirates’ defense. The island boys faced a difficult opponent that appeared more organized and maintained possession while repeatedly threatening San Pedro’s goal area. That pressure paid off in the 7th minute when Wagiya’s Edson Contreras penetrated San Pedro’s defense and sent the ball into the back of the net.
The Pirates bounced back, making a series of close attempts without success. Wagiya tried to find a second goal but encountered a stronger San Pedro defense. Meanwhile, the Pirates continued to press, searching for an opportunity to level the score.
Moises Hernandez found the breakthrough in the 28th minute, sweeping through Wagiya’s defense to score the equalizer. Although Wagiya appealed for an offside call, the goal stood, and the first half ended 1-1.
After returning to the pitch, San Pedro proved to be the dominant team. Wagiya’s attempts were unsuccessful, while the Pirates continued creating opportunities. Their efforts paid off in the 71st minute when Hernandez struck again, giving San Pedro a 2-1 lead.
The deficit did not faze the visiting team, and on two occasions they came close to tying the match. For several minutes, Wagiya regained control and threatened San Pedro’s goal, but their long-range shots and headers failed to find the back of the net.
With six minutes of injury time added, the San Pedro Pirates went on the offensive in search of a third goal. Following a long cross from the left side, Hernandez connected with a well-placed header in the fourth minute of injury time to complete his hat trick and give the Pirates a 3-1 lead. Fans in the bleachers erupted as the third goal effectively secured the victory.
Minutes later, the final whistle confirmed San Pedro’s solid 3-1 victory over Wagiya and their second consecutive win of the season.
Elsewhere in the PLB, Progresso FC and Port Layola drew 0-0, while Verdes FC defeated Benque Viejo United FC 13-0. League action continues this weekend, with all matches taking place on the mainland.
