Ministry of Agriculture Hosts National Vegetable Stakeholders Meeting

On January 26, 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise held its annual National Vegetable Stakeholders Meeting with vegetable producers from the various productive areas around the country at the National Agriculture and Trade Showgrounds in Belmopan.

The National MSMEs Strategy and Roadshow comes to Caye Caulker; San Pedro in October`

On August 5th, the Government of Belize launched the first ever national Mico, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) Roadshow. The initiative is to support and guide businesses under the MSME category. The program is held across the country, including the Cayes. The first Roadshow off the mainland arrived in Caye Caulker on Thursday, September 22nd, for a three-day event. The program will be in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, from October 26th through October 28th at the Lions Den and Central Park.

UPDATE: Belizean-American caught trying to smuggle undersized lobster tails at PGIA

The Fisheries Department (FD) has provided an update about a Belizean-American busted on Friday, April 22nd, attempting to smuggle out of the country 183 undersized lobster tails through the Philip Goldson International Airport (PGIA). After his detention, the unidentified man was issued a summons to be arraigned in the Magistrate Court. He faces a minimum fine of $20,000 for trying to export seafood without a valid permit, possession of lobster during the closed season, and possession of undersized lobster. According to the FD, the Magistrate will determine the fine and penalty in court.

100 undersized lobster tails intercepted at international airport

Authorities at the Philip Goldson International Airport reportedly intercepted an attempt to smuggle over 100 undersized lobster tails on Friday, April 22nd. According to preliminary investigations, a ring transports undersized conch and lobster between Belize and California, USA. There are no reports of anyone arrested for the offense, and the Fisheries Department is to provide further details of this seafood bust on Monday, April 25th.

Temporary ban on the importation of dogs into the US affects adoptions at Saga

The temporary suspension on the importation of dogs into the United States (US) as of July 14th is not only affecting dog lovers but future pet adoptions destined for the US from the island’s Saga Humane Society. The temporary ban implemented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was announced at the end of June and applied to high-risk rabies countries, including Belize.

Ministry of Agriculture Holds Meeting with Grains Stakeholders

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise, in conjunction with the Directorate General for Foreign Trade (DGFT), the Customs Department, and the Belize Agriculture Health Authority (BAHA), held a national grains stakeholder meeting at the National Agriculture Showgrounds with contact farmers from the Cayo, Orange Walk, and Corozal districts.
