CCJ Reinstates Manslaughter Case in Death of Caye Caulker Resident Hilberto Sotz
On January 20th, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) brought renewed attention to the 2015 death of then 18-year-old Hilberto Sotz after reinstating manslaughter charges against two police officers involved in the case. Sotz died while in custody at the Caye Caulker Police Station after allegedly being beaten by police officers Hallet King and Leonard Nuñez.

Caye Caulker to Get New Police Station
The official signing of a contract to construct a new police station in Caye Caulker took place on Tuesday, January 13th, with the participation of Area Representative the Honourable Andre Perez and his Cabinet colleague, the Honourable Oscar Mira, Minister with responsibility for the police. The project is valued at BZ$1.54 million and will be funded by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration.

Police Outline 2026 Plan After Crime Drop in San Pedro & Caye Caulker
The Division 4 Police Departments, which oversee San Pedro and Caye Caulker, have outlined their first-quarter strategy for 2026, building on a reported ten percent reduction in major crimes in 2025, making Division 4 one of the few jurisdictions nationwide to see an overall decline. The strategy aligns with the national Crime Control and Prevention Strategy 2025–2029. Police priorities for the first quarter include maintaining tourist safety, addressing petty theft, gang activity, drug-related offenses, and traffic violations, while expanding community outreach initiatives.

New Police Station for Caye Caulker; San Pedro Slated for Improvements
Following a nationwide tour, the Honorable Kareem Musa, Minister of Home Affairs and New Growth Industries, announced several upcoming projects for police formations across Belize, including the construction of new stations. The first was confirmed on September 18th in the southern community of Bella Vista. Other municipalities identified for new facilities include Santa Elena, Corozal, Orange Walk, and Caye Caulker.

Machete Attack in Caye Caulker Leaves One Man Severely Injured
Caye Caulker Police are investigating a machete attack that left Mark Budd, 37, with serious injuries to his arm and hand. The incident occurred shortly after midnight on Thursday, August 28, in the Bahia area of the island. Budd was later transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital in Belize City, where he was admitted and listed in stable condition. Reports indicate he lost two fingers in the attack.
