Morning fire destroys two popular beach establishments in Caye Caulker

A morning fire on Friday, November 10th, destroyed two popular business establishments in Caye Caulker, La Cubana Restaurant and the Barrier Reef Sports Bar and Grill, causing significant material losses and the displacement of nine people. While the Fire Service begins its investigation into the cause of the blaze, the Caye Caulker Village Council (CCVC) is looking at ways to assist the victims and has already started planning a donation drive to help them. More information will be shared when they launch the fundraiser.

Juan Carlos Novel charged for the Caye Caulker homicide of Leslie Verde

On Saturday, November 4th, there was news from La Isla Cariñosa of Caye Caulker about the discovery of a woman found dead in her home. The deceased was identified as 32-year-old Leslie Verde. The body was bruised, and police have since launched an investigation into the cause of Verde's death. While investigations continue, no one has been detained.

John Hyde Jr. charged for the murder of Floyd Samuels in Caye Caulker

Police have formally arrested and charged 26-year-old John Elwin Hyde Jr. with Murder following the shooting death of Caye Caulker resident, Floyd Samuels, 45. On the night of Saturday, June 3rd, Samuels was shot dead at his residence on Avenida Mangle. According to a police report, two male persons reportedly went to his home to purchase tobacco leaves (‘fonto’) from him. Afterward, neighbors reported that they heard gunshots in the area.

Caye Caulker fisherman dies after struck by his boat propeller

Police say Castro was fishing on the north channel of Caye Caulker when apparently, he fell overboard and was injured by the propeller. The report said he suffered large cut wounds to his ankle and thigh. Police investigation indicated that Castro managed to climb back into this boat and was assisted by people passing by. He was transported to the Caye Caulker Polyclinic, but according to the police report, he succumbed to the injuries.

Caye Caulker Councilor arraigned for the charge of Wounding

Councilor George del Cid of the Caye Caulker Village Council was arraigned in the San Pedro Magistrate after reportedly hitting a man in the face. He appeared in court on Tuesday, November 30th, and was charged for Wounding. He was offered $2,000 bail, which he met, and was ordered to return to court on February 17, 2022.

The Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB) at the Caye Caulker police station received a computer courtesy of the Caye Chapel Four Seasons development.

Region Four: 99% of San Pedro/Caye Caulker Police officers vaccinated

Police officers are part of the frontline workers who are required to be vaccinated against COVID-19. The task has not been easy; however, in Region Four (Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker), almost 100% of the 113 officers have received their first vaccination.
