Belize National Bartender Cup held in Caye Caulker; San Pedro’s Joe Pate among the top three

The fifth edition of the Belize National Bartender Cup was held in Caye Caulker on Saturday, August 5th, with the winner emerging from the Cayo District. After mastering the competition, Imer Mai from San Antonio, Cayo, was recognized as the top bartender in the country. He will represent Belize at an international competition in the Dominican Republic scheduled from September 4th through the 9th. San Pedro Town was also well represented, with Joseph ‘Joe’ Pate bringing home third place.

Investigation ongoing in the murder of Mirza Morales; believed to have ties to the 2019 San Pedro Double Murder

Former San Pedro resident, 31-year-old Mirza Morales, was murdered at her business establishment, La Casona Restaurant and Bar, at El Progresso (Seven Miles) in the Cayo District over the weekend. According to police reports, the incident seems to have been a targeted attack, as no signs of a robbery were observed. Before relocating from San Pedro Town, Morales was the partner of tour guide Mario Graniel who, along with American tourist Dr. Gary Swank, was shot dead during a fly-fishing trip.

Ministry of Agriculture Hosts World Bank Executive Directors

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise hosted a high-level delegation from the World Bank on February 20, 2023. The delegation, which included executive directors representing various countries on the board of directors, visited 7 Miles El Progresso and San Antonio villages in the Cayo District to observe first-hand how farmers have benefited from World Bank-funded projects implemented in Belize over the last five years.

San Pedro Pirates continue as PLB leader after crushing Verdes in home away game

On Sunday, February 12th, the San Pedro Pirates secured another important win after defeating one of the strongest teams in the Premier League of Belize (PLB) Verdes, 4-2. This win keeps the island football team on top of the PLB Closing Season's standings with 13 points as the national tournament rolled into its fifth week.

Girl Powered Leadership Camp 2022

On August 12, 2022, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Transport, through the Department of Youth Services (DYS), concluded its first-ever Girl Powered Leadership Camp. The two-week camp was hosted at the Youth with a Mission campus in Roaring Creek Village, Cayo District, and was split into two cohorts: the first for girls aged 14-17 and the second for young women aged 18-22, with each group attending a week consecutively. A total of 80 participants from across Belize attended.

Registration Ceremony Held for Sayab Farmers Co-operative Society Limited

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise announces that the Department of Co-operatives, responsible for the registration and regulation of co-operatives, held a registration ceremony for Sayab Farmers Co-operative Society Limited on July 22, 2022. Under the department’s oversight, the new co-operative has transitioned from an ad hoc farmers’ group to a formal enterprise, and will now have access to auditing, conflict resolution services, and entrepreneurial development programs, among others.

MIDH continues housing project on the mainland; the Cayes are yet to be included

While the ongoing housing program by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development and Housing (MIDH) has yet to reach San Pedro Town or Caye Caulker, 20 homes were delivered to deserving families in December last year in the mainland Cayo and Stann Creek Districts. The MIDH has completed 30 other houses that will soon be given to their owners, and the ministry has approved 35 more to be built. These are single-bedroom homes, and the criteria to qualify when applying to MIDH are applicants/families with none or low income who own a piece of land or have permission to build on someone’s lot. The program assists single parents, the elderly, and the disabled.

Forest Department Makes Donation to Itzama Society

On June 18, 2021, the Belize Forest Department, under the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change, and Disaster Risk Management, donated BZ$65,000 worth of equipment, transportation and uniforms to the Itzama Society.
