Belize Receives Donation of COVID-19 Vaccines from Lithuania

On April 4, 2023, a donation of Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines for children (12 years and older) from the people and Government of Lithuania was officially handed over to the Government of Belize.

MOHW Advises on Increased Cases of COVID-19 and Respiratory Illnesses

The Ministry of Health & Wellness (MOHW) informs the public that over the past two weeks there has been an increase in COVID-19 cases, from 69 cases reported over a seven-day period in the first week of December 2022 to 271 cases reported between December 19 and 27. The current projections from the Epidemiology Unit at the ministry show a rise in cases into the new year, with a peak by mid-January. the ministry also notes an increase in influenza (flu) cases that cause similar symptoms to COVID-19.

In July 2020, the European Union (EU) reallocated 500,000 Euros from the existing “Health Sector Support Programme Project (HSSP),” to be put towards the preparation and response to COVID-19. Through this reallocation, the EU and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) donated two medical waste autoclaves (valued at over BZD$400,000) to the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MoHW). This action is linked to the Health Sector Programme for Belize financed by the EU with more than 10 million USD implemented by its partner PAHO/WHO.

Ministry of Health & Wellness Continues Surveillance of Monkeypox

The Ministry of Health & Wellness (MoHW) informs the public that as part of its enhanced surveillance of monkeypox, three persons have been tested for the virus and have been reported as negative. There are four additional cases that are being closely monitored. Samples have been taken from those persons and results are expected shortly.

MOHW clarifies the requirement to import commercial and home test kits for COVID-19

On Wednesday, July 13th, the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) issued Statutory Instrument No. 100 of 2022 (https://www.pressoffice.gov.bz/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/SI-No-100-of-2022-Public-Health.pdf) which informs about approved testing institutions, restrictions on importation of home test kits and equipment and the requirements to validate home test kits. The official document also touched on the respective penalties.

Newest COVID-19 variant detected in Belize

On Tuesday, July 12th, the Ministry of Health, and Wellness confirmed the presence of the latest subvariant of the deadly COVID-19, Omicron BA.5, in Belize. The ministry confirmed this after the results of 40 samples dated between June 1st to the 28th tested with the Omicron variant. The report's breakdown shows that 39 samples were positive for the BA.2 subvariant, and one sample tested positive for BA.5, the latest strain of this toxic disease.

Health and Care Day held in San Pedro

On Friday, June 17th, the San Pedro Chapter of the Belize Red Cross, with support from the San Pedro Lions Club and in collaboration with the San Pedro Town Council, hosted a community health and care day at Central Park. Despite the inclement weather, the fair saw a good turnout, and those who came out learned more about the health services offered by the different agencies participating.

COVID-19: Pfizer Vaccines for children ages 5-11 now available in San Pedro

The COVID-19 vaccination campaign continues, and starting Thursday, May 26th, children ages 5-11 in San Pedro Town will begin receiving their first dose. Health personnel will begin visiting schools to administer the vaccine on Thursday at New Horizon Seventh Day Adventist primary school and Friday at Ambergris Caye Elementary School.
