Traffic accident claims life of island resident
A motorcycle accident in the early hours of Sunday, November 10th, resulted in the death of 30-year-old Eric Williams. The tragic incident occurred on Crocodile Street in the San Pedrito area, where Williams crashed into a lamppost, sustaining severe head injuries. According to an official report, the accident happened just past midnight. It stated that Williams, a carpenter from the DFC area, was riding a black and blue AKT motorcycle when he collided with the lamppost.

San Pedro Police Formation strengthens community policing
The San Pedro Police Formation has been active in their weekly meet and greet sessions around the island. The initiative has seen Superintendent Egbert Castillo and other police officers engaged in efforts to strengthen community policing by visiting residents throughout the different subdivisions of San Pedro Town. At their latest meet and greet, the island police force visited the DFC area, where they learned more about the needs of the people in this subdivision and listened to their recommendations.

San Pedro Lions Club delivers funds to fire victims
On Wednesday, July 19th, San Pedro Lions Club presented financial assistance to three families affected by recent fires. The unfortunate incidents occurred during the week of June 19th, leaving victims in San Pedrito, DFC, and San Mateo with their homes destroyed and all belongings lost. The island Lions Club collected food and clothing for the victims as well. Through dollar drives, sales, and assistance from the community, they provided the needed funds to the families affected. With efforts and contributions from individuals across the island, the club raised $5,586.23, distributed among the three affected families totaling 17 individuals.

Fires destroy homes in San Pedro; victims need help
Three fires in one week have left families across San Pedro Town without homes and belongings. The first occurred in San Pedrito on Monday, June 19th, with a second fire within the DFC area on Thursday, June 22nd. The third blaze was reported in San Mateo on Saturday, June 24th. Local organizations have helped the fire victims, but more assistance is needed. The fire victims in San Pedrito can be assisted by calling 629-4176, while those from the second fire can contact Mirella Bacab at 628-9628 and 637-2247; or deposits can be made to her Atlantic Bank Account, Mirella Bacab, #211874774. Those affected in San Mateo can be assisted by contacting Leticia Chimilio at 639-0266.

Flooded school grounds receive material; islanders in low-lying areas ask for help
The recent heavy rainfall left many neighborhoods flooded and impassable, with even the schoolyards affected by the bad weather. The local authorities, San Pedro Town Council, and Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez have started addressing the flooding issue. The works began by filling the flooded grounds at the New Horizon Seventh Day Adventist School in the DFC Area. The school was almost inaccessible due to the flood. Many applauded the efforts to remedy the problem; however, residents living in flooded neighborhoods hope their areas can be visited and assisted in any way possible.

SPTC to start street repairs in subdivisions again
Early in August, the San Pedro Town Council set in motion a plan to rehabilitate streets in the subdivisions around San Pedro Town. A portion of the street at the entrance of the San Pablo area was fixed but works abruptly stopped. Weeks later rains left streets and neighborhoods in areas like DFC and Escalante flooded, prompting residents to ask about the street infrastructure plan. The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) stated on Friday, September 24th, that street works are to commence in the coming weeks and explained that the delay was due to securing equipment, and necessary finances to continue the work.

Early morning fire at DFC subdivision destroys grocery store
The San Pedro Fire Department is investigating a fire that consumed a wooden structure with zinc roofing a few hours before dawn on Thursday, September 2nd, in the DFC area south of San Pedro Town. The gutted structure served as a small grocery shop, and although it was near other buildings, the blaze was extinguished before it could spread. No one was injured, but the material losses are estimated to be over $25,000.

Copper, K9 protector of the San Pedro Airport
Many islanders are known for their love for dogs and Ambergris Caye is one of those pet havens with great stories involving these furry friends. One of these untold tales is about a pot-licker known as Copper, who hangs around/guards the hangar area of Tropic Air at the John Greif III municipal airport. Known to have been abandoned from a very young age, Copper found love growing up around motorized equipment, paint shops, and eventually aircraft.
