King Charles III officially crowned; Belize has a new monarch

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Commonwealth nations recognizing the British crown as their Head of State were part of the historic coronation of King Charles III on Saturday, May 6th, at Westminster Abbey in London, England. The event also saw the coronation of Queen Consort Camilla. Belize is one of the Commonwealth realm countries with ties to the British monarchy and was represented at the coronation by a delegation led by Governor General Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam, the Minister of Education, Culture, Science and Technology, Honourable Francis Fonseca.

President of Cuba Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez visits Belize

For the first time, a Cuban leader visited Belize on Sunday, February 12th. The First Secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba and President Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez were officially visiting the Jewel, where he was invited to an extraordinary joint session of the National Assembly. The historic visit was a sign of the strong ties between both countries. The visit was also the opportunity to sign two agreements between Belize and Cuba, and the United States (U.S.) urged to lift sanctions on the island nation.

US Ambassador to Belize Michelle Kwan makes first public appearance and says she is happy to be here

On Wednesday, December 7th, the newly installed United States (US) Ambassador to Belize, Michelle Kwan, made her first public appearance at a US Embassy-hosted candlelight vigil in the Capital City of Belmopan. Kwan and Belize’s Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam, and Belmopan Mayor Sharon Palacio presided over the event honoring the 16 days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).

Remembrance Day in Belize honors fallen heroes

Sunday, November 13th, was observed as Remembrance Day in Belize and other Commonwealth countries in memory of all the men and women in service who fell in the line of duty during the first and second World Wars. A ceremony was held at the Fort George Memorial Park in Belize City, where wreaths were laid and tributes paid to those who fought for freedom.

National Service Day honors the late Rt. Hon. George Price and Queen Elizabeth II

The National Service Day this year on Monday, September 19th commemorating the 11th anniversary of the passing of the Father of the Nation, the late Right Honourable George Cadle Price, was also a holiday to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s death. That same day she was being buried in London, England, and Belize’s Governor General, Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam, attended on behalf of the country to pay our respects to the former Head of State. The day was celebrated with civic activities in places like San Pedro Town, while a Wreath Laying ceremony took place in Belize City at Price’s resting place.

Governor General travels to London for Queen Elizabeth II’s State Funeral

Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam, Belize's Governor General, is in London, England, for Monday's State Funeral of Queen Elizabeth II. The Belizean dignitary, who represents the British Monarchy in Belize, will also be attending other events associated with the passing of Her Majesty. Ambassador Stuart Leslie, Cabinet Secretary, will act as Governor General during her absence.

Official celebrations for Queen Elizabeth II Platinum Jubilee begin; activities to take place in Belmopan

On Thursday, June 2nd, the United Kingdom (UK) and the Commonwealth nations observed a once-in-a-generation celebration as Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II marked her 70th year on the throne. The 96-year-old British monarch is the first to reach a Platinum Jubilee as head of the UK and the Commonwealth. The celebration will also be observed in Belize, part of the Commonwealth, with the lighting of ‘The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons’ in the capital city of Belmopan at the Governor General’s field on Thursday evening.
