Queen Elizabeth II celebrates 96th birthday

Belize’s Head of State, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, turned 96 on April 21st. This year, the Queen is also celebrating 70 years as head of the British Monarchy under a festivity dubbed Platinum Jubilee. She is the longest-reigning monarch in British history.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, as Head of the Commonwealth, has recognised Dorla Bowman, representing Belize, as the 222nd Commonwealth Point of Light in honour of her exceptional voluntary service championing women’s rights and gender equality.

Pedro ‘Pete’ Salazar SR bestowed with Ordinary Members of the British Empire recognition

Ambergris Caye’s businessman Pedro ‘Pete’ Salazar Sr., was among 12 proud Belizeans awarded with The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. The recognition was conferred on Wednesday, March 9th by Governor General Her Excellency Floyla Tzalam on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on the occasion of New Year Honours 2020 and 2021. Salazar was appointed Ordinary Members of the British Empire (Civil Division) (MBE) for his community activism.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge: Prince William and Kate excited to visit Belize in March

On Thursday, February 24th, it was officially announced that Belize would be one of three Commonwealth nations the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince William, and wife Kate Middleton will visit in their upcoming Caribbean tour starting March 19th. The Royal Highnesses are making these visits on behalf of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II for the Platinum Jubilee. The other countries they will visit include Jamaica and the Bahamas.

Prince Philip dies at 99; Belize pays tribute

On Friday, April 9, the Prime Minister of Belize, the Honourable John Briceño, on behalf of the Belizean people, sent his condolences to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II on her husband's passing, the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip. The Duke was 99-years-old. According to an official note from the Buckingham Palace in London, England, he died peacefully on Friday morning after falling ill in February of this year.

Her Majesty The Queen recognises Belizean volunteer Michele Irving with Commonwealth Points of Light award for service during COVID-19 pandemic

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II has recognised Michele Irving from Dangriga Town, representing Belize, as the 139th Commonwealth Point of Light in honour of her exceptional voluntary service supporting the most vulnerable during the COVID19 pandemic. Michele is supporting the most vulnerable in her community during the current COVID19 crisis by coordinating the provision of goods and assistance to the elderly, survivors of gender-based violence and people living with HIV. Michele is also working with local NGOs to ensure that access to sexual and reproductive health services is maintained during the pandemic.

During his visit, he entertained and inspired the students by sharing stories and pieces of literature, while giving insight into the complex roots of the Belizean culture.
