Belize to hold referendum on legalization of marijuana; Ambergris Caye residents weigh in on the matter

While there is no set date yet, the Council of Churches has been able to trigger a referendum exercise on whether to legalize cannabis/marijuana in Belize. They managed to get the request approved through petitions by meeting the required 10% threshold, which equals 20,000 signatures. Belizeans will now be asked if they agree with legalizing the production and sale of marijuana. The topic has generated mixed opinions nationwide, particularly in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye.

Churches collects close to 20,000 signatures for marijuana referendum

Although the Cannabis and Industrial Hemp Control and Licensing Bill of 2022 to legalize the recreational use, commercial production, and sale of cannabis (marijuana) in Belize was passed in the National Assembly, the council of churches is fighting for a referendum on the topic. Close to 20,000 signatures have been collected countrywide to meet the 10% threshold and force the government to hold a referendum legally. On Thursday, April 28th, Pastor Louis Wade of the National Evangelical Association of Belize said that on Tuesday, the documents containing the signatures would be presented to Governor General H.E. Froyla Tzalam in hopes for a referendum to be called.

Public officer caught in drug bust

On Wednesday, August 21st San Pedro Police searched the residence of 41-year-old Victor Lara and found a large amount of Marijuana, amounting to 89 grams.
