South Americans hijacked Cessna Caravan in Placencia southern Belize

The Belize Police Department along with Civil Aviation continue investigating the crash landing of a Cessna Caravan in the southern Placencia Peninsula in the early hours of Monday, October 16th. Civil Aviation said it was not an approved flight and as such the incident is being criminally investigated. Preliminary information revealed the aircraft, belonging to a local airline, had been stolen from the Placencia airstrip and flown by a pair of South American nationals who perished when the aircraft crashed shortly after taking off in the darkness of the early morning.

Caye Caulker airport reopens

On Wednesday, September 20th, the Caye Caulker Municipal Airport reopened after renovation. The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) said that the airport underwent a transformation that will enhance the travel experience and safety for both locals and visitors to Caye Caulker. The airport closed on July 18th, and the BAA stated that the central repairs included improvements to the runway. Some of the issues included undulations considered dangerous for the routine daily flights operated by the local airlines, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air.

Caye Caulker Airport will close for six weeks for renovations

Starting early in May, the Belize Airports Authority (BAA) announced that the Caye Caulker Airport would be closed for six weeks for a much-needed runway upgrade.

Maya Island Air airplane experiences a flat tire upon landing at Corozal airport

On Wednesday, February 6th, a Maya Island Air Cessna plane reportedly experienced a flat tire while taxiing on the Corozal Municipal Airport in Corozal Town. According to reports from the airline, ground personnel pushed the aircraft off the runway by hand to avoid obstructing the airstrip.
