Measles cases reported in Belize, MOHW encourages vaccination

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has increased surveillance at entry points, particularly at international airports, after two measles cases were detected in the country. The affected individuals are two teenagers who recently returned from a trip to Mexico. According to the MOHW, they have been isolated while the ministry monitors for other potential cases. The recommended preventive measure is to receive the Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine, available at health centers nationwide.

Health authorities on high alert after reported cases of Measles in the region

Recent reports of Measles cases in the region have prompted Belizean health authorities to heighten surveillance on any signs of the highly contagious disease. The Ministry of Health (MOH) raised the alarm after informed of a positive case of Measles in nearby Guatemala, apparently imported to that country from Europe.

Caribbean countries and territories are better prepared to keep imported measles from sparking outbreaks

A recent PAHO-organized workshop trained 35 Caribbean health officers on how to respond rapidly and effectively to any imported cases of measles or rubella.
