Mobile Health Clinic brings vital services to the DFC Area

On Saturday, April 5th, residents of the DFC area in San Pedro Town benefited from a mobile health clinic that offered essential medical services to the community. The initiative is a collaborative effort among the San Pedro Town Council, the San Pedro Lions Club, and Area Representative Honorable Andre Perez to enhance healthcare accessibility across the island. As the island's population grows significantly, providing these services to different communities has become increasingly important.

The Belize Health Sector Strategic Plan launched to improve public health and well-being

The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has launched a strategic plan aimed at improving access to universal health services for Belizeans. This initiative, known as the Belize Health Sector Strategic Plan 2025-2034, outlines a clear vision to address key challenges within the health system and enhance the nation’s healthcare services, including promoting healthier lifestyles. The program was officially launched on March 21st in Belize City. The event was attended by the ministry’s leadership and representatives from the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), a key partner that provides technical and financial support to the initiative.

Residents reminded to register for the National Health Insurance

In a few months, the National Health Insurance (NHI) is expected to be available nationwide, providing all Belizeans affordable, high-quality primary healthcare. To participate in this government initiative, where patients only pay a small portion of their medical bills, individuals must register at a healthcare center enrolled with the NHI. In-person registration is recommended and requires a social security number. However, in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, some residents have reported being registered in the program without their knowledge, leading to confusion and delays in their applications.

National Health Insurance program officially rolls out in Caye Caulker

The National Health Insurance (NHI) program now covers residents in all of Belize Rural South, which includes San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. The government program reached the Caye Caulker community on Friday, September 27th. A private clinic and a pharmacy signed contracts with the NHI to provide access to primary healthcare services and medication at a significantly reduced cost. The two accredited institutions are Dr. D’s Clinic and Prescription Value Pharmacy. To join NHI, Hicaqueños can register at these institutions with their Social Security Card. If their cards have expired, island residents can still register using their Social Security number.

Possible Hotel Tax increase in discussion

Following reports of a potential increase in the hotel tax from 9% to 12.5%, the tourism industry has expressed concerns. However, the Ministry of Tourism has clarified that this is part of a broader tax reform discussion, and no decision has yet been made.

The National Health Insurance (NHI) program was officially launched in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, following a signing ceremony with two private clinics on the island. The program aims to provide access to primary healthcare services at a reduced cost. To sign up, residents can now visit San Carlos Medical Center and San Pedro Urgent Care and present their Social Security Card. The national program will be introduced in Caye Caulker later this year.

Ambergris Caye residents can now register for the National Health Insurance Program

As announced in March of this year, Belize’s National Health Insurance (NHI) Program will start rolling out in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker. The NHI program allows registered members to obtain medical services from select healthcare providers for a fraction of the regular price or for free in some instances. While the details are finalized, residents in San Pedro can start registering at the San Carlos Medical Center in the downtown area on Pescador Drive. They must provide a valid social security number, proof of address, the number of family members living at the same residence, and a contact telephone number.

Prime Minister Briceño introduces upcoming fiscal budget

On Friday, March 8th, Prime Minister Honourable Dr. John Briceño presented the 2024-2025 fiscal budget under the theme ‘Staying on Track’. The budget prioritizes job creation, economic stimulus, support for the producing sector, and expansion in access to education. During the budget presentation at the House of Representatives in the Capital City of Belmopan, the Prime Minister also mentioned plans to expand the coverage of the National Health Insurance Programme across the country. During his address, he also cited global factors as the cause of the high cost of living in the country.
