OAS Secretary General says Belize and Guatemala need to continue working together

The territorial claim on Belize by Guatemala is far from over as it waits for the International Court of Justice (ICJ) settlement. Along the border dividing both countries, the Organization of American States (OAS) has an office where they monitor activities in the area. OAS Secretary General Luis Almagro arrived in the country on Sunday, August 21st, for a two-day visit. Almagro urged Belize and Guatemala to continue working together and cooperate through the Confidence Building Measures agreed between both countries.

Meeting of the Re-activated Belize/Guatemala Joint Commission

The Belize/Guatemala Joint Commission met on May 18th, 2021 at the Radisson Hotel in Belize City. The encounter emanates from a directive by the foreign ministers of both countries at their meeting in March 2021 at the Organization of American States (OAS) Office in the Adjacency Zone to reactivate the work of the Belize/Guatemala Joint Commission.

It was the first meeting between the two foreign ministers since they assumed their respective posts.

As part of the second phase of an Open Government project: Transformation to an Open Public Administration in Belize, The Trust for the Americas in coordination with the Organization of American States (OAS), announces the official formation of an Ad-hoc Multi-stakeholder Steering Committee: The Belize Open Gov SC. This Open Government project, through funding support from the US Embassy Belmopan, is working to strengthen the creation of networks and fostering multi-stakeholder collaboration, supporting a longterm process to spur innovation, improving local government services, and activating international support mechanisms for enabling Belize to join the Open Government global movement.
