Electrical pole falls in downtown San Pedro; Residents asked to report issues to BEL
An electrical pole collapsed in downtown San Pedro on Sunday, September 22nd. Nearby motorists shared images of the fallen pole next to a popular supermarket. Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, although it reportedly narrowly missed pedestrians and some vehicles. However, the incident caused power outages in some regions of the island. Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) personnel quickly responded to the incident, and residents said power was restored to some affected areas shortly after.

The country is currently experiencing a severe drought, which is not only affecting the agricultural sector but also threatening energy as well. For the past weeks, the water level at the Fortis Dam hydroelectric reservoir has been dwindling, and its management has stated that there will be only enough water for about two more weeks.

BEL Explains Extended Unplanned Power Outage in San Pedro
The unplanned power outage was caused by lightning which damaged protective equipment on the overhead transmission line (on the southern tip of San Pedro) which supplies power to the island from the mainland near Maskal, resulting in a permanent fault at that location. The prolonged delay in restoring the supply was due to a combination of the time taken to access the remote location (via boat), the marshy terrain, and the nighttime and weather conditions.
