Unions start week-long series of protests; main roads and highways blocked

The Belize National Teacher’s Union (BTNU), the Association of Public Service Senior Managers (PSU), and the Public Service Union have rejected the government’s proposed 10% salary cut. To further pressure the government, they have planned a week-long series of industrial actions expected to culminate with a massive nationwide strike. The first event took place on Monday, April 19th, as members of the unions blocked main highways leading to Belize City on the mainland.

GOB ready to reduce teachers’ and public officers’ salaries; unions poised to respond

On Friday, April 9th, the Government of Belize (GOB) is set to introduce the budget for the new fiscal year 2021-2022 at a special House Sitting in the Capital City of Belmopan. One of the topics of interest is the proposed 10% salary reduction for teachers and public officers. Although this proposal has been rejected by the Belize National Teachers Association,Association of Public Service Senior Managers and the Public Service Union, GOB remains convinced that a salary cut is necessary.

Budget presentation postponed; unions recommend government cut allowances

Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño was to introduce the national budget on March 26th but was postponed after the government failed to agree with the unions regarding a proposed 10% pay cut and increment freeze on teacher and public officer's salaries. The unions comprise of the Public Service Union, Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), and others, asked for the proposal to be put on hold to allow proper consultations and negotiations. The unions also provided the government with cost-saving and revenue enhancement recommendations for short, medium, and long-term results, discarding the need to reduce teacher's and public officers' salaries.

Budget Consultations Held with Public Service Union

The second in a series of budget consultations for fiscal year 2021/2022 was held on Wednesday, February 10th in Belmopan with members of the Public Service Union (PSU). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current financial state of affairs and to seek to find common ground on the development of a sustainable, practical and equitable homegrown plan for economic recovery.

OPM Appoints Commission to Investigate Sale of Assets

On January 26, 2021, Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño officially signed an order convening a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the sale of Government assets between the period October 2019 to November 2020.
