Belize welcomes two new resident ambassadors
As of March 30, Belize has welcomed two new resident ambassadors from key allies, Mexico and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Governor-General Her Excellency Dame Froyla Tzalam received the Letters of Credence from Taiwanese Ambassador His Excellency Amino C. Y. Chi and Mexican Ambassador Her Excellency Ana Luisa Vallejo Barba at Belize House in Belmopan.

Government acquires cutting-edge equipment for better Sargassum monitoring
The Sargassum season this year was one of the worst on record, with areas such as San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, and Caye Caulker severely affected by massive amounts of the brown seaweed washing onto shorelines. Although the influx has significantly reduced for now, the next season is expected to begin early in 2026. To better prepare for the recurring phenomenon, the National Sargassum Task Force has acquired new monitoring and management equipment. On November 7th, the task force received a drone, a laptop, and a sophisticated Sargassum forecasting tool, donated through the SICA Azul Project, an initiative promoting clean communities, in collaboration with the Republic of China (Taiwan).

Belize joins Taiwan in celebrating its 114th National Day
The Republic of China (Taiwan) celebrated its 114th National Day on October 10, marking over a century of history, democracy, and national identity. In Belize, the Taiwanese Embassy hosted a “Double Ten” reception on October 9th at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City. The event brought together government officials, diplomats, and special guests, reaffirming the close and enduring friendship between Belize and the Republic of China (Taiwan). Meanwhile, in Taiwan, Belize’s Governor General, Her Excellency Froyla Tzalam, attended the official ceremonies.

Belize to Begin Shrimp Exports to Taiwan
On July 30th, the Government of Belize announced that the Republic of China (Taiwan) has officially approved shrimp exportation from Belize. The confirmation came during a visit to Taiwan by a Belizean delegation attending the Second Meeting of the Administrative Commission under the Belize–Taiwan Economic Cooperation Agreement. This milestone follows over two years of technical collaboration and regulatory engagement between the two countries.

Site Inspection of San Pedro/Caye Caulker General Hospital Shows Progress
On Wednesday, July 23rd, Area Representative Honorable Andre Perez and officials from the Ministries of Health and Wellness (MOHW) and Finance conducted a site inspection of the San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital project. The visit aimed to assess the progress of the long-anticipated medical facility, which is being constructed to serve residents and visitors of the Cayes. The contractor reported that the project is on schedule and expected to be completed before its April 2027 deadline.

Ministry of Youth, Sports, and Transport Engages in Knowledge Exchange Mission in Taiwan
A delegation from the Government of Belize recently visited Taiwan to engage in a knowledge exchange mission hosted by the Central American Bank for Economic Integration (CABEI) and the Republic of China (Taiwan). The mission, which also included representatives from Guatemala, focused on green energy, climate resilience, e-mobility, and sustainable development.

Minister of Human Development signs a Letter of Agreement with the Secretary General of SISCA for the Elder Home Care Programme
Honourable Dolores Balderamos Garcia, Minister of Human Development, Families and Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, signed a letter of agreement with Anita Zetina, Secretary General of the Secretariat for Central American Social Integration (SISCA). This agreement establishes cooperation aimed at strengthening and expanding the Ministry’s Elder Home Care Programme. The signing was witnessed by Ambassador Her Excellency Lily-Wen Hsu of the Republic of China (Taiwan), which is financing this programme.

The construction of the San Pedro and Caye Caulker General Hospital, a significant milestone for the islanders, has begun. The first piles of its foundation have been erected, marking the start of a project expected to improve healthcare services for the community significantly.
