SAGA Humane Society

The San Pedro SAGA Humane Society continues to enhance its veterinary services by acquiring new medical equipment, made possible by the generosity of donors. The new additions include a centrifuge, microscope, and infusion pump. The donation was made possible through a partnership with the Brandi Crawford International Veterinary Foundation (BCIV Foundation), a United States-based nonprofit organization. BCIV's flagship program is based in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, where it works alongside SAGA to provide accessible veterinary care for island animals. Future additions to SAGA's shelter and veterinary clinic are expected to include an ultrasound machine, stainless-steel kennels, and visits by veterinary professionals.

Someplace South Café Bar in San Pedro hosted its 5th Annual Kentucky Derby Fundraiser for the SAGA Humane Society on Saturday, May 2nd, from 12PM to 6PM. The event drew a strong turnout of community members who gathered for food, drinks, live music, and a series of fun contests, all in support of animal welfare on Ambergris Caye.

The San Pedro SAGA Humane Society wrapped up a week-long spay-and-neuter campaign from February 20th to 26th in San Pedro Town. Led by SAGA President Dr. Heather, along with visiting Canadian veterinarian Dr. Adriana and two Canadian veterinary technicians, the initiative offered free spay and neuter surgeries as well as microchipping services. By the end of the campaign, the team carried out over 104 surgeries and microchipped the animals treated, continuing SAGA’s efforts to curb pet overpopulation on the island.

The annual Kelly McGuire Birthday SAGA Fundraiser lit up The Palapa Bar on Friday, February 6th. Singer-songwriter Kelly McGuire hosted the event, drawing a large crowd for live music, raffles, and community support for San Pedro’s only non-profit animal shelter and clinic, SAGA Humane Society. Steel drum player John Patty from Florida, USA, joined McGuire on stage, entertaining attendees with tunes that captured the island vibe.

On Wednesday, December 31st, SAGA Humane Society in San Pedro Town closed out the year with its final spay-and-neuter campaign, successfully providing 101 free surgeries. The initiative also included a vaccination campaign and multiple free microchip implants for pets.

The SAGA Humane Society continues to make significant strides in animal welfare after completing its penultimate free spay-and-neuter campaign for 2025 in San Pedro on December 6th. The campaign resulted in 59 surgeries, including several emergency procedures, a limb amputation, and an eye enucleation. The initiative was made possible with the support of volunteers and donors.

As 2025 ends, two of Ambergris Caye’s most essential animal-welfare organizations, SAGA Humane Society and ACES Wildlife Rescue, are appealing to the community for support through their annual fundraising initiatives. Both nonprofits play crucial roles in maintaining the island’s health, safety, and environmental balance, yet neither receives government funding. Their year-end campaigns aim to secure the resources needed to continue operations into the new year.

On Sunday, November 23rd, Saga Humane Society proudly inaugurated its new building on Sea Grape Drive in San Pedro Town, marking an important milestone in its 26-year mission to promote kindness and prevent animal cruelty. The celebration followed a busy and productive Saturday at the clinic, where the team completed several spay and neuter surgeries, handled emergencies, and continued progressing toward their annual goal of 1,500 procedures. Volunteers, supporters, and staff, including veterinarians Dr. Baptist and Dr. Heather, were recognized for their dedication, and the team also celebrated the birthday of clinic manager and vet tech Ingrid Lima. The grand opening event, held from 2PM to 5PM, welcomed community members who enjoyed tours of the new facility, an information booth, refreshments, and merchandise, including hats, t-shirts, and dog collars.
