Weather to blame for recent power outages in San Pedro
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) issued an official statement on Tuesday, April 8th, explaining the cause of a series of power outages in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, that occurred the day before. These outages affected island customers for several hours, from Monday night to Tuesday morning. They were attributed to light rain, excessive dust, and salt contamination at the company’s substations and related infrastructure.

BEL connecting Caye Caulker to National Grid via Submarine Cable
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is developing a project to connect Caye Caulker to San Pedro through a 34.5 kV submarine transmission line. This connection will integrate Caye Caulker into the national electricity grid, and the project is expected to be completed by July 2025.

Electricity service upgrade: San Pedro Gas Turbine is finally online
After several months of delays, Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has confirmed that the San Pedro Gas Turbine is now operational. This upgrade to the energy infrastructure is expected to supply the island with 21 megawatts of power. The introduction of the gas turbine became necessary because the current submarine cable, which connects to the national grid, was unable to meet the peak power demand, which is limited to 17 megawatts.

San Pedro Gas Turbine Successfully Commissioned as BEL Works to Replace Damaged Transformer at the San Pedro Generation Facility
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informs its Customers and the public that the San Pedro Gas Turbine (San Pedro GT) was successfully commissioned and load tested up to its rated capacity of 21 MW last week Thursday, September 5. However, the San Pedro GT is currently unavailable to supply power into the grid because of the failure (for a second time) of one of the three transformers that is needed to connect it to the grid, which occurred in the early morning of Saturday, September 7.
