Ambergris Caye and the region once again threatened by Sargassum bloom

Several Caribbean nations, south-east Mexico and Belize are seriously affected by hundreds of tons of the algae, which continues to arrive in large mats day by day. On Ambergris Caye, one of the areas frequented by tourist is the Boca del Rio strip and has become inundated with Sargassum making it unattractive and affecting all business establishments located on this stretch of beach.

Over the past weeks, large areas of the Boca del Rio strip were inundated with large amounts of Sargassum affecting many business establishments along the coastline. Beach hotels have also been affected. However, they have opted to set barriers in front of their beaches in an attempt to keep their areas free of the seaweed.

SPTC admits to issues within the Sanitation Department and garbage collection

The island administration says that they are trying to secure funds to update their equipment and zoning the main areas of town for a more organized trash collection. It was clear, however, that some of the plans discussed to tackle the issue were the same as last year’s resolutions; house to house educational campaigns, hiring additional staff to engage the community, and consequences if SPTC rules are not met.
