Spiny Lobster season comes to a close; fishermen and restaurateurs declare a good season

The 2022-2023 season of the Spiny Lobster (Panulirus argus) officially closed on Tuesday, February 28th, through June 30th. The fishermen said the stock was satisfactory throughout the season, providing them with good fishing grounds while leading seafood restaurants added that the supply of the popular crustacean was enough for their operations.

Belize Fisheries Department informs public of Amendments to the Spiny Lobster Regulations

The Belize Fisheries Department, Ministry of Blue Economy and Civil Aviation takes this opportunity to inform the fishing community and the general public that selected provisions of Statutory Instrument 128 of 2021, including amendments to the Spiny lobster regulations will be implemented in a phased approach. This strategy has become necessary given the outcomes of recent engagements with several fishing communities across the country.

100 undersized lobster tails intercepted at international airport

Authorities at the Philip Goldson International Airport reportedly intercepted an attempt to smuggle over 100 undersized lobster tails on Friday, April 22nd. According to preliminary investigations, a ring transports undersized conch and lobster between Belize and California, USA. There are no reports of anyone arrested for the offense, and the Fisheries Department is to provide further details of this seafood bust on Monday, April 25th.

Lobster season officially opens; island fishers busy at work

For all those lovers of the Caribbean Spiny Lobster, the 2021-2022 season officially opened on Thursday, July 1st. Fishermen in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, set sail early in the morning and hours later returned with a bounty of tasty crustaceans that were sold and delivered to restaurants. The opening of the season also signals another anticipated event on the island - the annual lobster festival.

Calendar of events for the San Pedro Lobster Festival announced

While Caye Caulker is not hosting their annual lobster fest due to COVID-19, the anticipated event, which celebrates the opening of the lobster season, is set to take place in San Pedro Town. On Friday, June 11th, the San Pedro Lobster Festival committee announced a schedule of events revealing the different venues of this year’s Lobster Crawl. Traditionally this culminates with a block party at Central Park; however, there will be no block party this year.

Island fishers charged for possession of closed-season and undersized conch and lobster

Fishers Edwin Flores, Andy Cob, Cesar Lima, and Elvis Hercules were detained in separate incidents on Saturday, April 25th, in a joint operation conducted by the Hol Chan Marine Reserve (HCMR) and the San Pedro Police Formation.

Lobster season closes February 15th

On Saturday, February 15, 2020, the Belize Fisheries Department will officially close the lobster season. Until June 15th, no traps can be set, and no one should consume lobster within the next four months.

It’s official: Lobster Season is Open!

The annual island celebration of the Spiny Lobster started with the Lobster Passport Crawl and will end on Saturday, June 22nd with a grand block party at Central Park.
