Southwest Airlines, where “bags fly free”…
We’re pretty sure this delightful tagline has travelers mentally packing and preparing for the October 2015 Houston-Belize route launch. As we discovered during a very informative meeting with Brad Hawkins, Senior Advisor in Communications at Southwest, ‘bags fly free’ is a HUGE positive in the aviation industry. Joined by Tropic Air’s Anthony Hunt (Chairman of the Belize Aviation Development Committee) and Julie Kee, Brad met with the media on the island to talk about Southwest’s move to bring more visitors to Belize.
As frequent travelers know, Belize offers endless opportunities to explore, relax, enjoy and just be. Our islands and waters offer the watersports that so many seek, and our jungles hide waterfalls, wildlife, thrilling terrain, historic sites all across the 8,867 square miles of this tiny tropical country. And if we’re talking about marketing Belize via Southwest Airlines, that tagline could easily mean packing your fishing, snorkeling, hiking – all kinds of gear for the amount of fun you’re bound to have in Belize! Brad first visited Ambergris Caye, Belize in 1992, and he mentioned how special he felt this place to be. He remembers thinking “keep it that way”, and on his return visit he was pleased that the special feel remains. And now he’s working with Southwest towards making that experience extend to others eager to explore.
We already have airlines bringing daily flights to Belize, so what’s the difference with Southwest? Aside from two free 50-pound bags chock-full of items to make your next vacation here super-awesome, they also DO NOT charge additional fees! More often than not, travelers’ biggest complaint is about hidden fees and extras that take a chunk out of their fun money before they have even gotten to their paradise destination. Well, Southwest is here to ease that travel headache, which means more margaritas and Belikins in your future!
Booking is ONLY done at Southwest.com – no Kayak, Orbitz or Travelocity. This keeps their costs low, thereby extending those savings to you the customer! This also makes it easier for personalized service – from your booking until you walk off the plane. Of course, those who have traveled Southwest always mention the great service and happy employees – which makes customers happy in turn, as their travel experience is a pleasant one.
For Belizeans living abroad, Southwest’s Houston-Belize route brings that sweet return home ever closer. With over 93 destinations in 41 states across the US, and Puerto Rico, connecting to Houston with the world’s largest low-cost carrier will be a bonus.
