On Tuesday, December 1st, the governor of the Mexican State of Quintana Roo Roberto Borge Angulo, along with the coordinator of ports and maritime markets Guillermo Ruiz de Teresa, inaugurated the new, modern, and international boat terminal dubbed “Filiberto Sabido Padilla” in the city of Chetumal. The terminal, which is located at the border city’s municipal dock “Nachi-Cocom,” has been a key player for decades in the maritime transportation between Chetumal and Belize, especially to and from Ambergris Caye. It is expected that this new boat terminal will not just strengthen the communication with Belize, but also be a bridge to reach out to other countries in the Caribbean and Central America.
At the inauguration, it was revealed that the cost of the refurbishment of the boat terminal cost over $13 million Mexican pesos (approximately $766,362.12US). The project also included additional funding for the pavement of 300-meter block letters to welcome visitors and lighting at the entrance. The investment came from a desire to accommodate the increase in tourism that the state has been experiencing. Presently, Quintana Roo is the most important tourism destination in Mexico, where the percentage of bookings is over 90% and amounted to 47% of the total tourism arrivals to Mexico in 2015.
Currently, San Pedro Water Jets and San Pedro Belize Express commute the route between San Pedro and Chetumal on a daily basis. This allows the flow of about 30 thousand passengers every year and it is expected to increase in 2016.
