Xunantunich – Maiden of the Rocks

The San Pedro Sun has partnered with the Belize Tourism Board in 2012 – the year of the Mayas – to feature one major Mayan Archaeological Site per month in our Visitor’s Guide. This month, we take a look at Xunantunich, one of the first sites to be opened to the public.
The name, Xunantunich, pronounced “zshoo-NAN-too-NEECH” as interpreted from the Yucatec dialect, means “Maiden of the Rock.” The site was opened to the public with the completion of the ferry and a road in 1954…MORE
