Wolfe’s Woofer: Elephant

Sunday, December 7th, 2014

Dennis-Wolfe-Wolfes-Woofers“Hello, sweetheart,” I said, answering my phone. “What’s up?”
“Can you pick up Davin from school today for me?” Melody asked.
I said, “Sure. That’s what grandfathers are for.”
Since I arrived before class was over I sat on the porch and waited.
“All right, class,” I heard the teacher say. “I am thinking of an animal whose name begins with the letter E. What is it?”
There was an excited murmur in the classroom. Then I recognized Davin’s voice exclaiming, “I know! I know, teacher! It’s a elephant!”
“An elephant,” the teacher corrected. “But that’s very good, Davin. Now, someone name an animal whose name begins with the letter T.”
“I know! I know! Two elephants!” Davin shouted.
The class of nine year-olds exploded with laughter.
“Davin, you are being disruptive again,” the teacher said. “Leave the classroom and take a timeout on the porch.”
“Hey, Grandpa,” he said, when he came out.
“Are you having a bad day?” I asked.
“Not really. Teacher always says that if we know the answer we should share it with the rest of the class. If I know the right answer, I’m going to give it.”
“Was that the right answer?” I asked.
“Sure, Grandpa,” he said. “Anybody knows two elephants starts with a T.”
From inside the teacher said, “All right, class. Now that you are settled down we will try again. Name an animal that starts with the letter M.”
Before I could stop him Davin raced to the door, stuck his head inside the classroom and shouted “Maybe a elephant!”
