“Hey Dennis, are you coming to Ma’s birthday party tonight?” Reuben asked. “We’re renting the whole restaurant and bar.”
I ran into my young friend Reuben at Tropic Air as I was coming in from a flight to Belize City. He graduated university in the US and after five years of working in Texas he was coming back to Belize to settle down.
“I wouldn’t miss it,” I said. “Will I get to meet your fiancée?”
“Sure. Rosa’s flight is touching down now. At the party though, I want you to pretend you don’t know her. I’m going to sneak her in before I introduce her to my Ma.”
“Why would you sneak her in?”
“Ma’s never been happy with any of my girlfriends and I’ve never figured out why. I told her I would introduce her to several different girls to see if she can guess which one I’m going to marry.”
At the party I sat at the table with Reuben’s mother. During the first hour Reuben brought three girls over to meet her at different times. They were all equally pretty and lively. I thought Rosa was prettiest but just barely.
After the last of the young ladies went back to the party Reuben said, “Ma, I told you earlier I’m going to marry one of the girls I would introduce to you tonight.”
“I know,” the old lady said. “She’s very pretty.”
“What? Do you think you know which one?”
“Of course,” she said. “That girl, Rosa. She’s the one.”
Reuben was astonished
“How could you possibly know that?”
“I didn’t like her.”
