Regulations limiting large trucks in town to take effect next month
In October 2024, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) issued a six-month notice to all large trucks and container vehicles, informing them that starting in April, they would be restricted from entering the downtown area. That deadline is approaching, and the council has provided no further updates. Residents continue to report that these large trucks are not following a designated schedule that allows them to transit through the town core at specific times of the day.

SPTC to implement new regulation to restrict large trucks and containers in downtown next year
The ongoing traffic congestion in San Pedro Town is expected to significantly decrease by April 2025, when large trucks (such as dump and sand trucks) and container vehicles will no longer be allowed in the downtown area. The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) made this announcement regarding traffic management on the island on Tuesday, October 22nd. They clarified that trucks transporting fill material must avoid downtown—from the southern gas station to the Boca del Rio Bridge—and instead transport their cargo via designated barge routes.

Toll fees help finance Boca del Rio Bridge maintenance
In June 2023, the Boca del Rio Bridge (Sir Barry Bowen Bridge) was reconstructed and reopened. The bridge was transformed significantly from an unstable, wooden bridge to a two-lane concrete structure. As always, regular maintenance is pivotal to keeping the bridge in good condition, and as such, collecting a toll continues to be implemented to subsidize the cost. Private vehicles are exempt.

Paving starts on main street in San Juan subdivision
The ambitious project to pave the main streets across the subdivisions of San Pedro Town continues, with works now beginning at the San Juan subdivision just north of the downtown area. A portion of the main street has already been paved, and work will commence on the other side, stretching north and ending by the Boca del Rio bridge.

San Mateo residents presented with plans to improve their community
A presentation to discuss an improvement project for the subdivision of San Mateo provided residents with a first look at the different plans to uplift the infrastructure and services in the community. Some of these plans presented by the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) include paving the main streets, a drainage system, garbage management, better access to utilities, creation of public areas, and even the possible building of a second bridge connecting San Mateo with downtown San Pedro, Ambergris Caye.

Boca del Rio Bridge officially opened
The festivities of this year’s Dia de San Pedro made space for the blessing and formal inauguration of the newly built Boca del Rio bridge connecting San Pedro Town with northern Ambergris Caye. On Thursday, June 29th, a ceremony was held next to the bridge, officially unveiling the structure whose reconstruction started in December 2021.

Construction debris under the Boca del Rio bridge poses danger to boaters
Several boat captains are asking the respective authorities at the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) to remove what is believed to be construction debris from around and beneath the Boca del Rio bridge, including a large metal object jutting out of the water. This object in the water is deemed a navigational hazard to boat operators, particularly those traversing under the bridge at night.
