Electricity supply issues still threatening Ambergris Caye; nationwide load shedding scheduled

The country's energy crisis continues, but Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) is tackling the issue as best as possible. To maintain power stability on the national grid, BEL is implementing daily load shedding or planned outages for some regions of the country. This has become necessary as BEL currently does not have enough generation capacity in the country after its primary provider in Mexico has been unable to supply them due to power demands on their side.

Plans discussed to upgrade the power supply for Ambergris Caye

The Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, and the World Bank organized a public information session at the Sunbreeze Hotel conference room to discuss a project to enhance the resilience of the electricity system in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. Held on Thursday, April 4th, the consultation outlined the details of the Belize Renewable Integration and Resilient Energy System project funded by the World Bank. It will involve a battery energy storage system, grid-resilient infrastructure, and capacity building.

BEL Restores Power to Grid Following Power Interruption Affecting Most of the Country

Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) informs our customers of an unexpected interruption of power supply which affected most areas of the country, except for the Corozal District at approximately 11:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024. The outage was due to a protective shield wire coming in contact with the transmission line in Orange Walk. The shield wire serves the function of protecting the transmission line from lightning strikes.

The country purchases electricity from the neighboring northern country, and often when there are electrical problems in Mexico, Belize is affected.
