Beach Nourishment Project

Beach nourishment at Boca del Rio showing positive results

In October 2022, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) embarked on a project to save the downtown beaches. To address the issue, the SPTC began a restoration project with a demonstration site in Boca del Rio in front of the severely eroded beach at the San Pedro High School. The project employs nature-based solutions and the guidance of local scientists. A little over a year after its implementation, the local authorities report good results and a steady beach recovery.

What to expect from SPTC’s third year in office

The San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) is rolling into the final year of its first term in office. In an interview with Mayor Gualberto' Wally' Nuñez, he shared some accomplishments and what island residents can expect during their third year before the 2024 municipal elections. The Mayor said that his administration had worked hard since day one when they took over in March 2021. According to him, they found the town council in a precarious condition and had to start restructuring to salvage the administration. Nuñez said they have overcome a deficit and concentrate on projects such as street rehabilitation, beach nourishments, community programs to stimulate the local economy, and constructing a new bridge in the Boca del Rio area.
