Belize Reef Systems experiences “worst” coral bleaching event
In the past months, the Belize reef system has been experiencing adverse effects of coral bleaching. According to the Fisheries Department, bleaching is not uncommon and, over the past decades, has been caused mainly by a rise in seawater temperatures in combination with chronic local stressors and practices. Several organizations across the country have been working together to support the ability of coral ecosystems to become more tolerant, resistant, and resilient to their external stressors. The current bleaching is arguably one of the worst bleaching events Belize's reef systems have experienced in the last decade.

Early preparation and understanding risks are key to reducing loss, damage and injury to fishers and their families.

2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season is almost here
The 2021 Atlantic hurricane season is just days away, and according to predictions, it will be another above-normal season. The season officially runs from June 1 through November, and forecasters estimate the number of named storms will range between 13 and 20, of which three to 10 could become hurricanes and even major weather cyclones ranging from category 3 to 5 storms.

Invest 90-L being monitored for early hurricane activity
Since Sunday, March 26th, the National Hurricane Center has been closely monitoring the first Invest 90-L, which is sitting east of the Bahamas, for its potential to develop into a subtropical storm.
