San Pedro active COVID-19 cases near 200; vaccination rates increase on the island

The number of infected persons with COVID-19 across Belize continues to increase. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, as of Friday, October 8th, 187 active cases have been reported. Two islanders remain hospitalized in Belize City, and health authorities say that in the first seven days of this month, three San Pedranos died with COVID-19. However, the vaccination campaign shows promising results with a positive increase in islanders getting their first and second doses of the vaccine against the virus.

The testing sites, accessed as walk-in or drive-thru, are located at the Civic Center in Belize City and the parking lot adjacent to the Belmopan Civic Center in Belmopan. Operational hours are from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Belize Receives Second Batch of COVID-19 Vaccines from Mexico

On October 2, 2021, the Government of Belize, through the Ministry of Health & Wellness, received 100,000 doses of AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines from the Government of the United Mexican States through its embassy in Belize. CDC and Baylor College of Medicine Partner to Bring COVID Sequencing to Belize

On September 29, Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat joined U.S. Embassy Belmopan Medical Officer Sarah Kieffer and Dr. Kristy Murray, Director of the Center for Human Immunobiology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, on a tour of the Belize Central Laboratory to view donated genomic sequencing equipment used to detect COVID-19 variants in Belize.
