Fuel Prices Drop in Belize, but Cost of Living in San Pedro Remains High

Fuel prices in Belize have decreased over the past few weeks, with prices on the mainland dipping below $11 per gallon. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, prices for diesel and gasoline, the main types of fuel consumed, have also decreased compared to previous years. The price for diesel per gallon is currently $12.07, while regular gasoline is $11.50.

Tour Operators in the fuel subsidy program not to raise tour prices

It has been reported to the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) that some tour operators currently enrolled in the fuel subsidy program are raising the prices of their services. According to BTB, this should not be the case as the subsidy program assists them in coping with the increase in fuel prices and should not result in increasing their tour prices. Tour operators benefiting from the subsidy are not to take advantage of the program as such actions can have a negative impact on the tourism industry.

Government Mitigating Impacts of Fuel Prices

The Government of Belize reiterates the various steps Cabinet has taken to cushion increases in the imported price of fuel products, which has risen substantially as a consequence of, among other developments, the war in Ukraine.

Premium fuel price almost $18 per gallon; Regular and Diesel fuels price remains the same

The price of fuels continues to increase, and on Tuesday, July 5th, Belizeans woke up to learn that Premium gasoline is now at $17.60 per gallon. This increase is said to affect people on the mainland who use this fuel primarily. On the island, Regular gasoline and Diesel, the main types of fuel consumed, remain at $13.91 and $13.82 per gallon, respectively.

GOB to provide fuel subsidies for tour operators and public transportation on the mainland

To avoid an increase in the cost of services, such as tourism, the Government of Belize (GOB) and the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) will provide a capped fuel subsidy for eligible tour operators up to $1.5 million. The decision was made on April 5th during the weekly Cabinet meeting.

Fuel Price Update

The most recent shipment of diesel received this week brought with it a further increase in acquisition costs. However, to maintain the pump price at the current level, the government reduced all levies on diesel by 76 cents per gallon. This is in addition to an earlier reduction in taxes of $1.17 that took effect on March 12, 2022. Thus, the total reduction in taxes on diesel this month now stands at $1.93 per gallon.

Change in Pump Price of Fuel Products Effective August 19, 2020

The prices for regular gasoline will register a decrease and diesel will register an increase as follows: Regular gasoline will decrease by 14 cents from $8.76 to $8.62 per gallon; diesel will increase by 19 cents from $8.21 to $8.40 per gallon. The prices for premium gasoline and kerosene will remain unchanged at $9.36 and $5.43 per gallon, respectively.

Changes in the Pump Price of Fuel Products

The price for premium gasoline and kerosene will register decreases as follows: Premium gasoline will decrease by 59 cents from $10.99 to $10.40 per gallon; Kerosene will decrease by 74 cents from $7.36 to $6.62 per gallon. The prices for regular gasoline and diesel will remain unchanged at $9.73 and $9.48 per gallon, respectively.
