Belize Chairs 30th Special Meeting of COHSOD

Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour, and Local Government, chaired the 30th Special Meeting of the Council for Human and Social Development (COHSOD), an organ of CARICOM, in Georgetown, Guyana, on May 24. Present at the meeting were Ministers of Labour and heads of delegations from CARICOM member states.

Ministry of Labour Establishes Historic Labour Complaints Tribunal

The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government hereby notifies the public that the Labour Complaints Tribunal is now fully appointed and functional for the first time in the history of Belize. The tribunal was appointed by Hon. Oscar Requena as Minister of Labour in accordance with Section 200 of the Labour Act, Chapter 297 of the Substantive Laws of Belize, Revised Edition 2020, “A Labour Complaints Tribunal shall be established for the purpose of providing a fair and impartial appeal process arising from complaints of unfair dismissal or wrongful termination.”

Hon. Oscar Requena Leads Delegation to Guyana

Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, is currently leading a delegation to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana to learn from their experiences in promoting the rights and development of indigenous people through the implementation of legal mechanisms and community development policies.

GOB clarifies proposed Trade License Bill 2022

On Friday, May 13, 2022, Hon. Oscar Requena, Minister of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government, presented a bill in the National Assembly, for the repeal and replacement of the Trade Licensing Act, Chapter 66 of the Laws of Belize, Revised Edition, 2020.

The Opposition calls on the government to not raise taxes

The Opposition, the United Democratic Party (UDP), calls on the current administration to abstain from increasing taxes, particularly in areas like motor vehicles, road permits, and within all the villages in the country. According to the UDP, last week’s Cabinet briefing hinted at these possible implementations that will cause more damage than good to the Belizean people.

Labour Department Launches Online Employment Services System

The Ministry of Rural Transformation, Community Development, Labour and Local Government held a virtual launching ceremony for the new online Employment Services System (ESS). The Ministry celebrates this achievement as its second electronic system since the start of this year.

Ministers Break Ground for Rural Electrification Project in Toledo District

The groundbreaking ceremony followed a meeting convened with stakeholders to chart the way forward for the implementation of the emPOWERing Rural Electrification Project (emPOWER Project). The project is part of the Government of Belize’s strategic plan to fulfil its national sustainable strategy of 100% access to modern and affordable electricity coverage in the country. It aims to provide renewable energy solutions to assist Belize in achieving universal energy access through the installation of 400kW of solar photovoltaic and battery storage that will serve the villages of Indian Creek, Medina Bank, and Golden Stream in the Toledo District.
