Gang Truce Agreement

Share

Press Release – Government of Belize – Belmopan, 5th September, 2011 – The Government of Belize is pleased to announce that a meeting of Belize City gangs held yesterday with the Prime Minister, resulted in an agreement for the implementation of an immediate truce among the rival groups.

A Coordinating Committee has been formed to monitor the truce and to propose to Government community improvement projects that will also provide jobs in the various Belize City neighborhoods.

Government notes that last weekend’s carnival was incident-free, and Government is confident that the rest of the September celebrations can also proceed in an untroubled, festive manner.
For the longer term, Government is hopeful that Sunday’s historic truce will last and will bring to a halt the cycle of senseless violence that has been plaguing especially Belize City in recent times.
