Belize and the IDB partner with globally renowned Le Wagon to tackle digital skills gaps

The Government of Belize, through the Economic Development Council, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Compete Caribbean Partnership Facility (CCPF) – funded by the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, the Caribbean Development Bank, and the Government of Canada – announced a partnership with Le Wagon, a world-leading coding school, to launch a data analysis training bootcamp targeting Belizean youths on June 7th, 2021.

MOE’s Statement on COVID-19 Cases in Schools

The Ministry of Education (MOE) continues to monitor the schools that have reported COVID-19 cases since returning to face-to-face instruction. The ministry assures parents and the public that protocols continue to be strictly followed.

REDD+ spearheads training for journalists on climate change and its effects

The training/workshop on the 14th and 15th of May was organized by REDD+, which stands for Reducing Emission from Deforestation and Forest Degradation, (+) conservation, sustainable management of forests carbon, and stock enhancement. Other partners involved in the event included the National Climate Change Office (NCCO) and the Forest Department. The training raised awareness of Belize's strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and the impacts of deforestation and forest degradation.

Islander Doris Soriano graduates with a Business Law degree in Arizona, USA

Another island girl has gone abroad and achieved an academic degree. On Tuesday, May 4th, Doris Soriano became a Magna Cum Laude graduate from the Arizona State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Law.

Ministry of Education Updates on Phased-in Return to Face-to-Face Instruction

To date, 61 schools have applied to return on April 12th and 161 schools have applied to return on May 10th. Fifty-five of those schools have been visited by their district education centers (DEC), who have verified the schools’ readiness for approval to be granted to them. These verification visits from the DECs are ongoing to ensure that all schools are ready for the safe return of teachers and students. The remaining six schools in this first group will be returning in May for various reasons.

First Pre-schools re-open in San Pedro Town

After months without in-class sessions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, several pre-schools in San Pedro Town welcomed their students back after re-opening on Monday, April 12th. As requested by the Ministry of Education, schools across the country had to submit re-opening plans before operating once again.

Schools to start re-opening in April

The re-opening will be separated into two groups- 1 and 2. The first group is set to see schools re-opening on April 12th and the second one on May 10th. According to the Minister of Education (MOE), the Honourable Francis Fonseca, the phased re-opening will go through September of this year. As a result, not all schools will open their campuses at once. For a school to re-initiate in-person classes, they must submit re-opening plans to MOE and will be allowed to operate once their plan is approved.
