The World Bank Helps to Strengthen Belize’s COVID-19 Response

The World Bank has approved financing of US$6.2 million for the Belize COVID-19 Response Project, which will support the country in the acquisition and deployment of COVID-19 vaccines.

MOHW says clinically the Omicron COVID-19 variant is in Belize

The Ministry of Health & Wellness informs the public that the pattern of the COVID-19 cases has changed. Currently, the majority of cases present upper airway symptoms such as nasal congestion, runny nose, and sore throat associated with a mild fever and/or muscle aches and pains. The cases are increasing exponentially with a leap in the positivity rate from 2.5 to 16 in a very short period of time. While genomic sequencing is pending, epidemiologically, it appears to be the Omicron variant of COVID-19. 

United States Donates Ultralow Temperature Vaccine Freezer to Ministry of Health and Wellness

U.S. Embassy facilitated the delivery of an energy efficient, ultralow temperature (ULT) freezer for the storage of COVID-19 vaccines, donated by the U.S. Government through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to the Ministry Health and Wellness. A handover ceremony was held on 24 June, 2021 at the National Vaccine Building in Belmopan. In attendance were Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat, U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, a.i. Keith Gilges, and Ministry of Health and Wellness CEO Dr. Deysi Mendez.

Belize Celebrates Vaccination Week in the Americas and World Immunization Week

Belize joins the Region of the Americas in celebrating the 19th Vaccination Week in the Americas (VWA) and 10th World Immunization Week from April 24 to 30. This year’s slogan is “Vaccines bring us closer. #GetVax”. The theme highlights how vaccines bring us closer to family and friends and a world without suffering from diseases such as polio and measles.

Belize Receives First Set of COVID-19 Vaccines from the COVAX Facility

The Ministry of Health & Wellness announces the arrival of 33,600 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccines to Belize. The vaccines arrived on Marcg 31st, 2021 at 11:30 a.m. at the Philip Goldson International Airport. Hon. Michel Chebat, Minister of Health and Wellness, to receive the first shipment of vaccines from the COVAX Facility on behalf of the people and Government of Belize.

IDB supports Belize’s health sector in ensuring timely COVID-19 vaccine accessibility

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) approved the first hybrid sovereign guarantee operation, with an investment loan and a guarantee for Belize. The $2.1 million guarantee will provide support for interventions to contain the transmission of the virus by increasing and facilitating access to COVID-19 vaccines. Specifically, it will consist of the issuance of a sovereign guarantee to cover the purchase of the committed doses of COVID-19 vaccines (channeled through ‘Gavi’ Alliance’s COVAX Facility).
