San Pedro Tops National Rankings for Cost-of-Living Increases in September 2025

San Pedro Town has recorded the highest increase in consumer prices in Belize, according to the Statistical Institute of Belize’s (SIB) latest report on the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for September 2025. The island registered an inflation rate of 2.2 percent compared to September 2024, more than triple the national average of 0.6 percent, making it the municipality most affected by rising costs of goods and services.

San Pedro Records Highest Inflation in Belize in July 2025

San Pedro Town recorded the sharpest rise in consumer prices for July 2025, with an inflation rate of 3.1% compared to July last year. According to the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB), the island community has experienced a continuous increase in inflation throughout 2025, outpacing the national average of 1.2%.

SIB Reports Consumer Confidence Index Up by 5.2%

The Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) reported a significant increase in the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) for January 2025, which rose by 5.2% compared to December 2024. This improvement brought the CCI to 50.5%, indicating a shift in optimism about the economy and personal financial prospects for the first time since the SIB began tracking this indicator.

SIB reports that the consumer price increased by 2.6% in December 2024

Belize has experienced a significant increase in consumer prices, with a rise of 2.6% reported in the final quarter of 2024. This information comes from the latest report released by the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) on January 30, 2025. Rising costs in essential categories such as food and housing primarily drove the increase in the inflation rate.

Government plans on addressing inflation affecting Belizeans

The continued increase in the price of goods and services is taking a toll across Belize. In areas like San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, where the cost of living is higher, the situation is more alarming. Island residents report that prices for basic food items increase weekly, adding to the struggle to survive. While inflation has become a worldwide issue, the Government of Belize (GOB) has discussed the matter and, on Thursday, March 30th, announced several measures to address the concerning problem.

SIB’s April report shows decline in exports and increase in consumer prices

The April report from the Statistical Institute of Belize (SIB) notes that domestic exports declined by 13.6%, or $6.2 million, compared to the same period last year. According to the report, the sugar and banana products reflected the decrease in exports. In comparison, consumer prices rose by 5.8%. The areas/services affected included vehicle fuels, food, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

Government proposes $1.3 billion budget; awaits Senate approval

The proposed 2022-2023 Government of Belize (GOB) budget of  $1.361 billion will now be debated in the Senate before the governor general, Froyla Tzalam, issues her consent. On March 24th and 25th, it was debated in the House of Representatives, where the Leader of the Opposition, Honourable Moses 'Shyne' Barrow, criticized it and Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño disagreed.
