BEL Cites Rising Costs in Bid for Higher Electricity Rates
Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) has applied to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) for a 5.55-cent increase in the Mean Electricity Rate (MER), equivalent to a 13.9 percent rise, to take effect on January 1, 2026. The request comes at a time when Belizeans are already grappling with a rising cost of living, higher food and fuel prices, and ongoing concerns about the stability of the national power supply.

Electricity rates going up; consumers and PUC call out BEL’s utility practices
The cost of electricity will increase this month through June of this year. In an official note issued on Wednesday, January 5th, the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) announced that the Mean Electricity Rate or MER would be adjusted from $0.39.9 to $0.41.5 cents per kilowatt-hour. The increase was requested by Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) on December 10, 2021, reporting that it had paid more for power by the end of last year and is projecting to pay more in the first months of 2022.

BEL FTRP Concludes with Reduction in Rates
The 2020 Full Tariff Review Proceeding (FTRP) concluded on October 28, 2020 with the Public Utilities Commission’s (PUC) Final Decision reducing the current Mean Electricity Rate (MER) of 41.51 cents per kWh to 40.18 cents per kWh to take effect January 1, 2021 through to June 30, 2024.

Increase in electricity cost proposed for 2019
Belizeans could start the new year with an increase in their electricity bill. On Monday, December 10th Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) wrote to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to notify them that due to significant increases in the cost of power as of May 2018, the company is proposing an increase to the Mean Electricity Rate to $0.4150 per kilowatt per hour (KWH) for the remainder of the Annual Tariff Period from January 1st to June 30, 2019.
