Government Says MCC Grant Restored but Will Be Modified
On Wednesday, August 20th, the Government of Belize (GOB) announced that the country may still access the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) grant, despite the program being shut down in April of this year. Belize’s foreign service lobbied strongly for its reinstatement, and the effort succeeded. However, officials confirmed the agreement has been modified, and it remains uncertain whether Belize will receive the full US$125 million approved initially.

Government Still Hopeful for Millennium Challenge Corporation Grant
Prime Minister Hon. Dr. John Briceño remains hopeful that Belize may still access the five-year, US$125 million grant initially secured through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a United States government agency. Although the grant program was officially shut down in April 2025, Briceño said discussions are ongoing, following a conversation with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. On Monday, May 12th, the Prime Minister reiterated his optimism, saying that if the program is ended, the Government of Belize will seek alternative funding sources through its development partners.

Government of Belize and the Millennium Challenge Corporation Sign Grant Agreement for Compact Development Funding
The Government of Belize and the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC), a U.S. government agency, signed a Compact Development Funding Grant Agreement on March 1st, 2023. Prime Minister Hon. John Briceño signed on behalf of the Government of Belize and Jonathan Brooks, Deputy Vice President of Europe, Asia, Pacific, and Latin America, signed for MCC. U.S. Ambassador Michelle Kwan and Ministry of Economic Development CEO Dr Osmond Martinez also attended the signing ceremony.

High-Level Delegation Meets with Multilateral Development Banks, U.S. Government Agencies and Canadian Government Officials
Hon. Christopher Coye, Minister of State, Ministry of Finance, Economic Development and Investment, led a high-level delegation of Belizean officials to Washington, D.C., from April 19 to 22, 2022, for a series of meetings with senior representatives from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and the U.S. Development Finance Corporation (DFC). The delegation also met with senior representatives from the U.S. Treasury and the Office of Comptroller of Currency and held a bilateral meeting with Hon. Harjit S. Sajjan, Canada’s Minister of International Development.

A delegation from the U.S. government’s Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) led by Chief Executive Officer Alice Albright departed Belize on March 17th after a productive visit to introduce the agency’s development grant program – an MCC compact.
