Belize Rural South Area Representative supports 2021-2022 budget: what’s happening in BRS
On the last day of the debate on the proposed 2021-2022 $1.03 billion national budget by members of the House of Representatives on Friday, April 23rd, Belize Rural South (BRS) representative the Honourable Andre Perez stood up to support it. In his presentation, he discussed how the budget will assist his Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation and what is ahead for BRS, including Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.

Budget presentation postponed; unions recommend government cut allowances
Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño was to introduce the national budget on March 26th but was postponed after the government failed to agree with the unions regarding a proposed 10% pay cut and increment freeze on teacher and public officer's salaries. The unions comprise of the Public Service Union, Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU), and others, asked for the proposal to be put on hold to allow proper consultations and negotiations. The unions also provided the government with cost-saving and revenue enhancement recommendations for short, medium, and long-term results, discarding the need to reduce teacher's and public officers' salaries.

Budget Consultations Held with Public Service Union
The second in a series of budget consultations for fiscal year 2021/2022 was held on Wednesday, February 10th in Belmopan with members of the Public Service Union (PSU). The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the current financial state of affairs and to seek to find common ground on the development of a sustainable, practical and equitable homegrown plan for economic recovery.

Government denies intentions to cut public officer’s salaries; BBB will support motion if implemented
The current government has reportedly denied allegations that public officers’ salaries will see up to a 20% reduction in pay at the start of the new fiscal year. Should salary cuts indeed be implemented, the government was notified via a letter sent by the Belize Business Bureau (BBB) to support the action.

PM Barrow presents 2017-2018 National Budget
Under the theme ‘Bouncing Back-A Bold Belizean Recovery,’ the official National budget for the 2017-2018 fiscal year, was presented on Monday, March 13th.
