Queen Conch Season officially opens in Belize

Amid a world health crisis, Belizeans have one thing to be happy about as of Friday, October 1st. It is not Halloween, but one of the most anticipated seasons of the year the opening of the Strombus Gigas or commonly known as the Queen Conch. It is one of the main seafood staples in the country and a leading export product. The season will remain open until June 30, 2022, or until the yearly set production quota is met.

The Queen Conch Season is officially open; illegal conch fishing continues to be a challenge

As of October 1st, conch season opens & runs for approximately 7 months or until conch quota set for that period has been met, which ever comes first.

To preserve the marine species Queen Conch (Strombus Gigas) the Belize Fisheries Department (BFD) has come up with 884,092 pounds as the Total Allowable Catch for the 2017-2018 season.
