Improvements in Shrimp Industry Mark Positive Outlook

The Belize Aquaculture Limited and Vitali Alimentos, a Guatemalan animal feed company, have signed an agreement to grow quality shrimp post-larvae (PLs) stock to supply Belize’s shrimp industry. This follows recent improvements within the industry attributed to the infusion of technology and revised sanitation protocols for ponds, which have resulted in greatly improved productivity, reduced mortality and improved confidence, turning a new page for the once battered industry.

Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation leading project to make Belize an air cargo hub

The Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation (MBECA) is working on a long-term project to create an air cargo hub in Belize. This initiative is led by MBECA’s Minister, the Honourable Andre Perez, who, along with the Ministry of Tourism and Diaspora and Finance, will develop a roadmap within the next four weeks. This project aims to create another potential industry, create thousands of jobs and turn Belize into an important and strategic destination for the aviation industry.

Tour Operators in the fuel subsidy program not to raise tour prices

It has been reported to the Belize Tourism Board (BTB) that some tour operators currently enrolled in the fuel subsidy program are raising the prices of their services. According to BTB, this should not be the case as the subsidy program assists them in coping with the increase in fuel prices and should not result in increasing their tour prices. Tour operators benefiting from the subsidy are not to take advantage of the program as such actions can have a negative impact on the tourism industry.

IDB Joins Forces with Mexico to Promote Nearshoring

On July 6th, the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) announced support for plans by the government of Mexico to promote nearshoring, or the relocation of companies closer to end markets, to help foster sustainable development, especially in the country's south-southeastern states.

SENASICA Approves the Entire Country for Cattle Export

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security & Enterprise is pleased to report that the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (SENASICA, which is Mexico’s equivalent of the Belize Agricultural Health Authority) has granted approval for the entire country of Belize to export cattle to Mexico. The approval is a direct result of the bilateral meeting on agriculture held in Chetumal, Quintana Roo, between Belize and Mexico in July 2021.

Training Session for Coconut Farmers in Good Manufacturing Practices

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise in collaboration with the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID) is hosted a five-day training session for coconut farmers at Central Farm in the Cayo District. The series of training sessions are the result of the Bilateral Technical and Scientific Cooperation Project agreement between the governments of Belize and Mexico.

Local Farmers to Break Carrot Production Records

The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise informs that for the first time in the history of Belize, carrot farmers are on track to produce enough carrots to supply the local market for up to 10 months, using improved farming technology and practices, and new varieties. Up until 2020, farmers were only able to supply the local market with carrots for six months.
