Caye International Bank named Best Private Bank in Belize, 2019

Caye International Bank, based in San Pedro Town, was recently named as the ‘Best Private Bank in Belize, 2019’ by the Global Finance Magazine. This is the second consecutive year that the financial institution has been named the Best Private Bank in Belize.

Ruby’s Hotel sold to San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi Company

One of Ambergris Caye’s oldest beachfront accommodations, Ruby’s Hotel, has been purchased by the San Pedro Belize Express Water Taxi company. The idea of having an active water taxi terminal at this location is raising concern among residents and local institutions, due to its proximity to the San Pedro Roman Catholic School.

Bill Amendments aimed to standardize offshore banking regulations pass through the House of Representatives

The bills tabled at the sitting included the Income and Business tax Amendment Bill, the International Business Companies Amendment Bill and the Stamp Duties Amendment Bill.

Consultation held to discuss the integration of Corozal as tourism and agricultural product supplier

The consultation discussed possible economic strategies to revamp the Corozal Free Zone and improve the integration of the Corozal economy in northern Belize with the rest of the country.

Ministerial Meeting for the Central American Agricultural Council of SICA

During the Ministerial meeting several updates on regional project initiatives were presented, including the proposal for establishment of a Regional Agricultural Innovation Centre, Implementation of a Cooperation Agreement with the Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) – Central American Bank on Economic Integration (BCIE) - CAC on Disaster Risk Management and Climate Change; and the institutionalization of the Regional Markets Network.

Increase in electricity cost proposed for 2019

Belizeans could start the new year with an increase in their electricity bill. On Monday, December 10th Belize Electricity Limited (BEL) wrote to the Public Utilities Commission (PUC) to notify them that due to significant increases in the cost of power as of May 2018, the company is proposing an increase to the Mean Electricity Rate to $0.4150 per kilowatt per hour (KWH) for the remainder of the Annual Tariff Period from January 1st to June 30, 2019.

Another reduction in fuel prices

According to the Belize Bureau of Standers (BBS), effective Wednesday, December 5th the price of premium gasoline went down by $0.18 to $11.32, regular gasoline went down by $0.19 to $9.76, diesel went down $0.41 to $10.75, and kerosene went down by $0.55 to $8.15.

Cabinet approves Belize’s First National Trade Policy

The Policy is an outcome of the July 2016 National Trade Policy Framework, which has been developed following an extensive nationwide stakeholder consultation process.
