SPTC initiates demonstration project to restore severely eroded beaches
The time to start saving the beaches in downtown San Pedro is now. On Thursday, October 20th, the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC) began a beach restoration demonstration project at a section in Boca del Rio. The area in front of the San Pedro High School has severely eroded, and access to this short stretch of beach will remain closed to vehicular traffic. The public is asked to respect the signage erected.

Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Disaster Risk Management Hosts First Belize Climate Change Week
The Ministry of Sustainable Dev. Climate Change & Disaster Risk Management through the Belize National Climate Change Office and in collaboration with the Belize National Biodiversity Office hosted the first-ever Belize Climate Change Week from October 11th to 14th, 2022, at the San Ignacio Resort Hotel. The theme is “Enhancing Belize’s Position in Global Climate Action.”

SPTC prepares to restore eroded beaches in downtown San Pedro
To address the alarming rate beaches are eroding in San Pedro Town, the town council has partnered with local professionals and has worked on a plan to rescue over a mile of beach starting from the Boca del Rio beach park. The project will immediately tackle a section of the beach around the San Pedro High School (SPHS) area, which has eroded faster than anticipated. This area will serve as a demonstration site for the large-scale, long-term project to rescue the beach strip.

Conch season opens October 1st in Belize
The Queen Conch season officially opens from October 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023. The Belize Fisheries Department reminds the public that although the closing month for the season isn’t until June 2023, if the conch production quota is realized earlier, the season will be declared closed. In recent years, that quota has been set at 925,000 pounds.

Beach erosion in downtown San Pedro continues
The beaches of Ambergris Caye, particularly in the downtown area of San Pedro Town, could be a thing of the past if the ongoing erosion is not addressed. This problem is not new, as beaches have been eroding for years; however, some areas of the coastline in downtown San Pedro are disappearing at a rapid pace.

The Belize Fund for a Sustainable Future (BFSF) is pleased to welcome on board its first Executive Director, Dr. Leandra Cho-Ricketts. Her appointment is a critical step forward in operationalizing this new conservation fund for Belize.

Sailboat remains abandoned on the reef
In March of this year, a 35-foot sailboat named ‘Ramblynn’ ran aground on the reef in the Tranquillity channel area off the northern coast of Ambergris Caye. According to persons in the area, the sailboat belonging to Canadian national Glen Peter remains abandoned on the reef. There is no update on when this vessel will be removed, which may be damaging the reef.
