On Saturday, February 11, 2023, Belizean medical professionals attended the Sixth National Health Insurance Symposium, which was held at the Biltmore Plaza Hotel in Belize City.

Mobile health clinic coming to San Mateo Subdivision this weekend

Residents of the subdivision of San Mateo, north of San Pedro Town, will have access to several medical services at no cost on Saturday, February 18th, via a mobile health clinic. The mobile health clinic is made possible through the collaborative efforts of Area Representative Honourable Andre Perez, San Pedro Town Council (SPTC), the Ministry of Health and Wellness, and other organizations. The event will occur from 10AM through 3PM across from Pasadita Store.

Ministry of Labour Re-Initiates HIV/AIDS Policy in the Workplace Initiative

The Ministry of Labour, in collaboration with the National AIDS Commission (NAC), has reinitiated the HIV/AIDS Policy in the Workplace Initiative. As part of that engagement, the Labour Department and the NAC held a certified training seminar in Belize City on February 1st, 2nd, and 8th, 2023, for 12 Belizean companies and organizations. The program will be extended nationwide in the coming year.

MOHW weighs in on mental health following Nicole Polonio tragic death

The Minister of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Honourable Kevin Bernard, has spoken about the issue of mental health in the country and how it is addressed. This comes on the heels of a case in San Pedro Town, where islander Nicole Polonio was deemed mentally challenged and restrained with chains in her room. According to the post-mortem, she later died from positional asphyxia. Minister Bernard told the media that a mental health policy is underway and that the Cabinet and the prime minister requested his ministry and the Ministries of Human Development and Home Affairs work on a strategic plan.

Public Advisory: Amnesty mobile clinics coming to San Pedro in February

An amnesty clinic is being planned for February 4-5th in San Pedro Town. Designed for people to address their legal status in Belize, the island sessions will help those who need help with their applications. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security and Enterprise (MAFSE), the Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW), the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change & Disaster Risk Management, the Regional International Organization for Agricultural Health (OIRSA) and the Belize Poultry Association (BPA) inform the public that Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 has recently been confirmed in pelicans on the coast of Puerto Cortes and La Ceiba, Honduras.
