San Pedro active COVID-19 cases near 200; vaccination rates increase on the island

The number of infected persons with COVID-19 across Belize continues to increase. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, as of Friday, October 8th, 187 active cases have been reported. Two islanders remain hospitalized in Belize City, and health authorities say that in the first seven days of this month, three San Pedranos died with COVID-19. However, the vaccination campaign shows promising results with a positive increase in islanders getting their first and second doses of the vaccine against the virus.

COVID-19 infections, hospitalizations, and deaths affecting the unvaccinated

On Friday, August 20th, Prime Minister Honourable John Briceño stated that those currently hospitalized with severe infections and dying are unvaccinated patients. Briceño implored Belizeans to support the vaccination campaign, cautioning that if cases continue to rise, the government may take drastic measures, such as declaring a lockdown.

San Pedro answering the call to get vaxed; tourism sector leading by example

With the news that a variant of COVID-19 is in the country and infections are on the rise, the Government of Belize (GOB) launched a vaccine campaign urging as many Belizeans as possible to get the jab. In San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye islanders have answered the call, and several business establishments are informing the public that their staff is vaccinated.

Over 3,000 vaccinated in San Pedro; islanders start getting the second jab

Island residents in San Pedro Town, Ambergris Caye, have answered the call to vaccinate against COVID-19. As of Friday, May 7th, based on information from medical personnel, around 3,100 people have received the jab, with 71 islanders welcoming their second dose. As the vaccine rollout continues countrywide, the MOHW informed that over 46,000 people are currently vaccinated. The ministry appeals to Belizeans to sign up and get the vaccine.
