CDC and Baylor College of Medicine Partner to Bring COVID Sequencing to Belize

On September 29, Minister of Health and Wellness Michel Chebat joined U.S. Embassy Belmopan Medical Officer Sarah Kieffer and Dr. Kristy Murray, Director of the Center for Human Immunobiology at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital, on a tour of the Belize Central Laboratory to view donated genomic sequencing equipment used to detect COVID-19 variants in Belize.

As part of the country’s ongoing COVID-19 response, the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) and the Government of Canada donated six (6) High-Flow Nasal Cannula (HFNC) systems and two (2) advanced Patient Monitors with carbon dioxide (CO2) and invasive blood pressure (IBP) monitoring, including accessories and consumables to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH).

To strengthen the COVID-19 response in emergency management and surveillance at Belize’s points of entry, and mental health and psychosocial support in response to COVID-19, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) donated three (3) walk-through digital temperature body scanners, 13 HP Elitebook laptops with accessories, five (5) desktop computers, three (3) projectors, eight (8) digital cameras with accessories, 40 Samsung Galaxy tablets, and 34 refillable wall-mounted touchless sanitizer dispensers to the Ministry of Health.

For the past four months, the European Union (EU) and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) have been supporting the COVID-19 response in Belize. The reorientation of funds from the “Health Sector Support Programme Belize” project is enhancing the Ministry of Health’s capacity to conduct decentralized COVID-19 testing, improving infection prevention and control, and supporting the delivery of health services at the community level. As a result, hundreds of posters have been printed and distributed, radio and television campaigns are airing, and two autoclaves are being procured for medical waste management.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Belize in the framework of the Global Fund project titled “Building Resilience Through Innovation and National Accountability for the HIV and TB Response in Belize” is handing over essential items to support the Ministry of Health in the ongoing COVID-19 response. The testing equipment and ventilator is being handed over to the Ministry of Health and the vehicle is being handed over to the CSO Hub to support outreach to vulnerable populations
